Ahhh…the smell of an oily gun cloth in the morning!

By season’s end, most hunting guns, and especially shotguns, have seen considerable use and are due for a serious check over and clean-up. Most of us will bring out a rag and a bottle of gun oil to give our guns a good rub down before putting them away in a closet or gun safe. Prepare to Hunt!

The heat index along the Eastern Seaboard is pushing temps into triple-digits—105 today (Aug. 5, 2010). When it’s hot like this it’s easier to stay inside and wish for fall’s arrival rather than planning and preparing for it. The best time to start planning for the coming hunting season is at the end of last season. But it’s not too late to start planning for the upcoming hunting season, which is now only a few weeks away.

Like most things in life, planning is an important part of being successful. Hunting is no different. An excellent idea to help you plan is to keep a journal and take photos when you hunt. Last year’s journal and snapshots will help you prepare and plan for future hunting success. When you read about what happened last season it will remind you, which hunting spots produced best under what conditions. Looking at photos will also jog your memory. (more…)
