    asking because I don't have a clue, but do they use birdshot or buckshot for shoots like that?

    Birdshot, usually no larger than 7 1/2. Some matches have stages that use slugs as well, mostly for long range steel or short range paper shots.

    Correct - mostly birdshot but slugs and buckshot as well. The stage at 2:20 is all buckshot.

    What do slugs and buckshot do to steel targets at ranges under 50 yds?

    If the steel is rated for pistol ammunition at a minimum - it'll simply scrape the paint off of the surface.
