Nooby question re benelli M4

If I understood the users manual correctly, I have to put a round in the chamber, THEN I can load the magazine. I wanted to have rounds in the magazine, but not one in the chamber when I have it in use as a house gun. Is there a way to load the magazine but not have a round in the chamber?

Umm.. Just load the magazine

Just load the magazine.
To chamber a round when you only have rounds in the mag tube, hit the shell drop lever.
Then rack the bolt.

If the mag is full and chamber empty, you can also just open up the chamber and drop a round in.

That is what makes it "free carrier operation".

OK, thanks. I obviously didn't read the manual correctly. Gee what a novel idea...read the manual. What'll they think of next? :-)
