Stoeger Double Defense Coach - Trigger Malfunction

Just recently purchased a Stoeger Double Defense Double barrel shotgun, from Gander mountain. Took it shooting today. Fired two 2 3/4 target loads, with no problem.

After I ejected the spent shells, and reloaded it, it fired the right side barrel, but the trigger was stuck after that, and wouldn't fire the left side. I didn't want to mess with it.

The trigger is still stuck, and won't budge. This has NEVER happened before, and I have used many Cowboy style weapons, including the coach. Never ever had this problem before.

I am not going to hesitate to return it to my local Gander Mountain tomorrow, but why would the trigger get stuck like this? Brand new shotgun, very limited mechanical parts, 2 rounds of light target loads, and then a critical malfunction? Man... I am NOT happy about this, at all..

My first reaction is, did you take the stock off and clean the internals first.

The Stoegers are notorious for a lot of gunk in the internals.

Shoot me a PM and I can send you instructions for taking the stock off and cleaning the internals. I'd try this before you send it back to Stoeger.

hi, I just came home from the range, my double defense fired just fine. I cleaned it and put it back together, and now the trigger is jammed....please help....: O

I had the same problem as the OP. I pulled the gun apart to find that the piece that resets the trigger for the second shot is supported by a WEAK spring. I bought mine second-hand, so it may just be worn. I will likely go to the hardware store to find a similar-sized spring of higher strength.

i have the uplander with the double trigger and when i got it home the internals(with the stock off)was full of sticky shipping substance that took a little cleaning to get it out.i put vasiline in the internals and on any heavy fulcrum points and lightly oil the external surfaces with a good gun oil i have at the time.any way i could see it really causing problems in the single trigger models.

Update on my Stoeger Double Defense Coach Shotgun...

I returned the weapon to my FFL, and they sent the weapon back to Stoeger. I just received it today, and it appears that the trigger is working again. However, there are scuffs and scratches all over the receiver assembly, and it looks like it was test fired and had small chunks of lead in the barrel. I also received a letter that came with it stating that the weapon was cleaned and oiled before it was returned. This was not true.

I am not happy about this at all, because:

1. It took over a month to get my weapon back, due to the most ridculous flaw I've ever seen in a weapon that is specifically designed for home defense. (Disposable after two shots apparently.)

2. It came back in worse visible condition than I returned it. (They didn't even ship it back in the original container.)

3. They sent it back dirty, scuffed, with chipped paint and scratches all over.

I SENT THIS WEAPON TO THEM IN MINT CONDITION! Only fired 3 ROUNDS out of it after the trigger jammed and failed on me!

If you want a reliable weapon for home defense, don't buy this one. It's likely that during the event that you need this weapon the trigger will jam. I have read the other postings as well, and have come to the conclusion that Stoeger simply doesn't care about their commitment to quality. They use cheap parts and materials without any testing or quality assurance measures.

I also think it's sad that the customers rather not send the weapon back for warranty, that they would rather try and FIX the obviously flawed and faulty components themselves!

I will never buy another Stoeger product ever again! I will be filing a complaint against Stoeger U.S.A. with the better business bureau.

Sorry to hear it. I have had good luck with my Condor, but I think Stoeger has some quality issues, still.

Honestly, if I were looking for a self defense shotgun, I would go with a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 590.

Took the Stoeger Double Defense out to shoot today. It successfully shot 6 rounds through it before the trigger, ONCE AGAIN completely seized up on me.
