Default Model 1873 and SAA questions in general

    Hi there!

I'm thinking of purchasing a model 1873 in .357 versus a Ruger Single Six in .22/.22 Mag because of it's true old west look, availability, and lower price tag! I was wondering if you guys could solidify my decision by clearing up a couple things for me.

    1) The Single Six allows for all 6 chambers to be filled when loading. Can the 1873 be loaded with 6 rounds or does one chamber need to be empty for the hammer to close on when decocking for safety?

and 2) My brother owns a Double action S&W revolver in .357 mag that also takes .38 special loads. Does the same apply for the 1873 in .357 Mag?

Thanks in advance for any help you can render!

    Second things first:
Yep, the .38 Sp ctg will shoot wonderfully in a .357 mag reproduction '73 Colt.

    Now, the first part:
Some Single Action Army (SAA) clones have a transfer bar system like the Ruger which allows for 6 to be loaded safely. However, the originals did not and if you're thinking about a '73 SAA because of its Old West style, the clones such as Uberti makes (which do not have the transfer bar) are more true to the originals and therefore more authentic. It's all a matter of personal preference which way you want to go.

Is there some reason you believe you need more than 5 loaded at a time?

No, no reason, just a matter of practicality really. I'm a plinker, and enjoy target shooting alot. I suppose the 6th round would only be so I would have to reload slightly less often.

I also want to carry the gun with me while hiking wilderness trails here in AZ. I know there's alot of other more reasonable semi-auto plinker guns out there, I'm just a big fan of the SAA's style and look. Thanks for the answer though!
