An 1873 Cattleman is a cartridge gun, not cap and ball. It will shoot smokeless or black even though it may be a black powder frame. Try a Uberti Dealer for printed info.
There is an 1873 single action that looks exactly like the cartridge gun except that the cylinder has nipples and the gun functions as a cap and ball revolver. The hammer blow is offset enough from center that a cartridge cylinder won't work in it. It does not have a loading lever, so you have to pull the cylinder to load it. It even has an ejector for cartridges, even though there are no cartridges to be ejected.
I don't think they have been very popular--most people would rather use the traditionally designed cap & ball model with a loading lever. Haven't seen any instructions for them, but it is no problem to use a short starter to load the chambers when the cylinder is out of the gun. For safety, install the cylinder before capping the nipples.

Oh azhighpoint do a lil more research before you try drawin down on a smokin_gun... LOL! It is a Cap & Ball partner. There was a run of them by UBERTI made for England where they can't own cartridge guns. They got popular and the price was right. Therefore they are still being sold. They are a really nice piece, I tried to put a pic on here but guess they won't let you.
Gunsmith you nailed it, that's the one ... I love it. No wedge to bend ie Colt, smoother action and tighter than a 1858 Remington. They have brought them out in a 5 1/2" (Pieta) mines a 7 1/2" and I don't plan on practicing quickdraw with it. But I am pretty fast.. lol.
Benelli forums don't seem to have alot of Cap & Ball forums. Or am I just missing something?
Tyin' ta link some pic's of the 1873BP...

Hey smoking-gun! I have two 1873 BP SAA! As you stated, they were born out of necessity after cartridge handguns were banned in the UK. Mine have the 4.75" and 7.5" barrels. I love 'em.
Got myself an 1861 Navy and a 1873 Sporting rifle by Uberti also.
One question, did I read you right when you said there was an aftermarket loader available from EMF? Do you have a link? I could really dowithan extra.
Regards,
Bob
