hot soapy water and lots of scrubbin then after you get all the heavy stuff off i would give it a good scrubbin with some break free clp or some other type of oil based solvent then wipe off all the excess. enjoy thats why they invented smokeless powder

For all my blackpowder guns I use a mix of Windex with vinegar and water. The ratio is 1 part windex to 3 parts water. Windex with vinegar can be hard to find. I use it with the wet patch dry patch method. It is the fastest way I have found.
I take it your shooting pyrodex? Don't have any experiance with that, but shoot lots of black.
I curently own three black powder revolvers, and they get shot heavily.
The best way to clean them that I have found is to break them down and clean in a handy sink, I use the shop sink and facet, with as hot a water as you can stand. Use Dawn dishwashing liquid. Break the gun down to every last screw and part and get all grease, oil and fouling off. Dry everything off, sometimes I find it helpfull to use a hair dryer. Wipe everything down with Tompson's Center Wonder Lube 1000, put a good coating on it and put the gun and parts on a tin foil covered oven try. Set the oven at 300 deg. F. and leave in for about a half hour or so. This helps to "season" the metal like a cast iron skillit and make future cleaning eisier.
When the gun is cooled down wipe again with wonder lube and wipe it clean. Re-asimble and coat the action liberaly with wonder lube, and cylinder pin.
After that I only break down to the barrel, cylinder and grip. I wash everything out in the sink with Dawn and run a swab and patches down the barrel and cylinder, and whash out the action with hot water and an old tooth brush. Takes about 10 minets. Dry and re-wipe with wonder lube.
Done this way I only break the action down about every six months, and have gone a couple of months at a time without anything except a couple of wonder lube soaked patches down the bore. I have not had a proble with rust. I had one that was stored, after firing with no cleaning, in my room for a parts gun for about 10 years with out any rust.
One thing, with black powder(don't know about pyrodex) never, ever, use petrolium lubricant! With black powder it tends to mix with fouling and turn to a tar like substance and makes cleaning a real chore. Only use natural lubricant.
One thing about black powder, it may look dirty, but I can go to a clean patch quiker than I can with smokless. I also clean my smokless almost as often as my black powder guns so I don't realy notice a differance is cleaning time.
Regarding cleaning bp guns. I use Hogdon's triple 7 powder and get great effects, the big bang and smoke. To clean the barrel and cylinders I just use boiling water and tongs to hold the parts. pour the water through and just run dry patches. I sometimes scrub the cylinders with a bore brush. just make sure to dry it well and then oil it.
