Stoeger Coach Gun

I married a country girl 25 years ago...and I was finally able to make good on a promise made when I married her. That promise was to buy her a small farm in the midwest. Mission accomplished. Only hiccup is, that for a while longer, we have to be from time to time separated...she's on the farm and I'm still under contract on gov't job back east. While she usually feels comfortable and safe most of the time...there are those instances where she feels a bit unsecure and she asked me about a shotgun. Being a country girl, she's familiar with firearms, but isn't comfortable with my .357 magnum or my .270 Winchester. I'm considering getting her the Stoeger Coach gun just for some piece of mind. Thoughts?

The Coach gun is great for cowboy action shoots. But for defense there are better options. I would recommend an 18 inch pump such as Mossberg 500 or a Maverick 88. More modern, more reliable, more rounds (6 or 9), more configuration options (pistol grips, stocks, extra hunting barrels, rifled barrels etc.), more versatile. And they are not expensive at all. You can get a brand new Maverick for under $200.

i would avoid the mavrick my father-in-law has one and its not realy all that great evan tho its a clone to the mossburg

What is it that you don't like about the Maverick? Since Stoeger won't sell fully rifled barrels I was thinking of buying a Mossberg with a 30" or 28" smoothbore and an extra fully rifled barrel. I've also been looking at Mavericks.

I was arriving to the conclusion that Mavericks 88 and Mossbergs 500 had the same relationship as a Benelli M1 and a Stoeger 2000. Both made by different subsidiaries of the same company, with designs that are almost the same.

My experience with the Stoeger 2000 has been very good. At the range I often get asked about my "Benelli". I was concluding that the Maverick would have Mossberg-like reliability, just like my Stoeger behaves like a Benelli. What problems has your father-in-law encountered with the Maverick?

the acton was very difficult to work and the quality of the machineing was poor and the fit and finnish was also . i m just fearfull of buying "somting just like it" its the same but cheeper" it never is i work in a body shop and i deal with stuff like that at work every day and it gets old after a while
