Just as the topic implies, why did they decide to go with auto safeties on the Instinct? Is there going to be any way to make it into a traditional style safety?

A darn good question. My Renaissance has auto safeties so it isn't something new with Franchi. My 3 Winchester and the Browning O/Us have manual safeties and the 3 Rugers all had auto safeties. With the Ruger, it was possible to have the factory convert the safety to manual. I had this done on the 12ga gun because the darn thing kept re-setting itself under the recoil of the first barrel fired. The 20 and 28 gauge guns didn't have the problem so I left them "as issued".
I'd give Franchi a call. I'd guess the auto safety can be locked out. There may even be a post regarding this floating around for the Renaissance model.
I've never found it a problem. I can go either way but if it really bothers you, its worth the phone call.
