I'm having trouble determining the functionality difference in the M2 Field and the Super Black Eagle II besides the SBE II will handle the 3 1/2 " shells. Is that it or is the SBE II better in some other way?

Functionally, no difference. The SBE is a bit more "heavy-duty" with its steel upper receiver. I have several M1's and a SBE I. Aside from the SBE being a bit heavier, I've never really noticed any between how the two shoot. I never shoot 3 or 3.5 inch magnums. Consequently, I shoot the M1 a lot more than I shoot the SBE. If you're shooting a lot of magnums, the SBE is probably the way to go. If not, M2.

The question has been asked many times.

The SBE might be a tad easier to clean because of the two piece receiver. I have both an SBE l and the SBE ll, but I believe that I will own an M2 in the near future. Can't go wrong either way..Mike

I think the greatest advantage of the SBE2 over the M series is not the extra half inch of shell, but the ability to clean the trigger group without removing drift pins.

3 ½” shell capability is useless when hunting upland game. Upland game hunters on foot for a day following a dog appreciate a light gun. I purchased my first Benelli (the Montefeltro) years ago primarily for its lightweight.
I think it’s also worth mentioning the Benelli Ultra Light in this discussion (inside the Upland Game sub-forum).
