Cattleman model safety feature?

I found that if I push in too far on the rod that the cylinder rotates on, it protrudes through the hammer side and will not allow the hammer down far enough to strike the primer in the cartridge case. Was this meant to be a safety device? If not, it seems to work well.:rolleyes:

If you look at that rod (the base pin) you will see that it has two notches in it. If it is in the forward notch, the gun is in the safe condition and will not fire. That's the way it was designed.
