Hi, I am thinking of buying a schofield model breaktop. Has anyone had any experience with this model? I am trying to decide between a 38 spl. or a 44-40 in the 5" barrel, but still have not ruled out the 45LC!!. The 38spl. would be cheaper to shoot.The 44-40 and the 45LC are about the same to me, except the 45LC ammo appears to be a little cheaper and is also available in hollowpoint! Anyone have any problems with the schofield? How is the recoil in the 5"? Any advise would be greatly appreciated! regards, raven41

Don't have the Schofield, but I have a very similar Beretta Laramie (copy of the S&W New Model No. 3 breaktop) in 5" .45 LC and must say it is the most comfortable, most accurate cowboy revolver I own. My personal opinion is that the .38 might be a bit on the heavy side. I find the .45 very well balanced and comfortable to shoot with standard "cowboy" type loads. I use a 200 gr bullet and WW 231 powder and it shoots extremely well for me. I would say recoil is moderate and comfortable.

If you don't reload, it's true the .38 would be cheaper to shoot. If you do, I'd recommend the .45 from a balance standpoint if nothing else. It also depends on how much you plan to shoot it. If you're going to be shooting several matches a month and have to buy ammo, the .45 or .44-40 will get expensive. If it's just for casual shooting, then the ammo cost difference won't be a huge factor, I wouldn't think.
