Can someone tell me about

the difference between the "old model" and "new model" Cattleman Revolvers? I know it has something to do with the type of pin retainer, but I'm new to single action & need a little help here. I'm planning on buying a Birdshead Model soon!

The difference in history is from a manufacturing stand point. On the assembly line Colt had built up a large inventory of what is known as the old model designed in 1872 to be a back powder revolver. In 1873 the first cartridges were made with modern powder. Colt quickly retro fitted the existing frame inventory they had to the modern rounds. Only until they had sold through did they begin selling what we call the new model.
As far as the uberti guns go the only difference is that the old model is shipped with 2 cylinder screws. One has a flat head which is the more historically correct screw and a thumb stly screw which requires no tools to remove it from the front of the frame.
The new model has no screw in the front of the frame and comes equipt with a cross plunger syle release for the the cylinder pin
