View Full Version : Franchi 48 Problems in Cold Weather

I have a Franchi 48 20 guage, and the gun will not cycle in cold weather (below 40 degrees). During warm weather it cycles just fine. However, when it gets cold out it will not cycle. I clean it before I go hunting each time, so I do not think this is the problem. If anyone has had this same problem or has suggestions it would be appreciated. Thanks for any help I can get ahead of time.

First, be sure the friction ring is properly set for the loads you are using (light or heavy). If you have it set for heavy loads, you might switch it to the "light" load setting for cold weather.
Second, make sure there is no grease or heavy oil on any moving parts including the receiver rails. I believe that Franchi recommends the friction ring and magazine tube be kept dry, but a very light coating of lightweight gun oil may help a little. I like Breakfree CLP for lubrication.

Matt,
I have an al 48 12 g and it does the same thing. You should have two friction rings. A copper ring with black plastic around it and a ring that is shaped kind of like a cap. I'm no expert on metal but something happens and for some reason there is more friction when cold. Start removing rings. First the one shaped like a cap and if necessary the copper one two. I was hunting grouse the other morning (about 20 degrees)and mine would not cycle unless both rings were removed. My 2 cents.

Make sure you do not have any oil on the tube or the friction rings may be hanging up on the thickened oil due to cold weather. My 20ga functions flawlessly in cold weather.
