Just purchased a Stoeger 2000. Very nice gun.

I primarily do waterfowling, and want a tight pattern. I'm wondering if the the Modified choke will give me the tightest pattern possible given the Stoeger recommendation of not using a tighter choke with steel. Why is that? Is there an after marked full choke (my preferred choke) that I can use with steel?

Any suggestions/advice/info would be hugely appreciated.

I've read that choking your gun tighter than modified will not make much changes on the pattern that you get with a modified tube. However, choking it tighter might increase pressure, damage the tube, shotgun or yourself. So you have increased risk with no increase on benefits.

steel shot is also much harder and with the shot cups that most manufacturers use (being too plyable material) will penetrate the the wad. The material used in the choke tube will be jepordised along with the barrels threads if it's not made of a stronger material that wil not flex when shooting steel also ...

hope this helps
